Once upon a time, travel enthusiasts planned their adventures by sticking pins in a wall map. Now, thanks to image-based social media platform Pinterest, they have a convenient, visually appealing ‘virtual pinboard’ to share their holiday plans and dreams with like-minded people all over the world.
The site has just unveiled its latest feature, a mapping tool called Place Pins that allows users to map pinned images to geographical locations on a map. "Every day people pin about 1.5 million places, and now there are more than 750 million pins of these destinations on Pinterest” the social network announced.
More About Pinterest Place Pins
Place pins are available on both desktop and mobile, and come with key location data including address, phone number, and travel directions. To use the new feature, users can simply add a map to an existing board, or create a new board and hit ‘Add a map’ to start adding photos. Place pins appear as a number on the map, and clicking on these pinned locations leads users through to a pin that offers a brief description of the location and what’s so great about it.
These new map-enabled boards are interactive (multiple users can collaborate and recommend places of interest by adding their own pins) and can be used for everything from holiday planning and reminiscing, to plotting out favourite local nightspots or restaurants eg. “Favourite sushi places in Brisbane”.
If your resort is on Pinterest, this is yet another great opportunity to use the site to promote your property and the best places of interest in your local area. So what are you waiting for? Get pinning!
